Childproofing the Whole Home

babyproofing tips for the house

Carbon Monoxide/Smoke Detectors/Fire Extinguishers:

  • Carbon monoxide detectors not usually recommended for newer homes unless gas heater, fireplace, after earthquake. Never leave car running in garage and never start car while garage door is shut.
  • It is recommended that you have two 10ABC fire extinguishers (one in baby’s room). Be sure the extinguisher is new and still working.
  • Call The Gas Co. to have your gas appliances checked for leaks.

Outside Balconies:

  • Check for width of openings in balcony to be sure they are 4” or less
  • Check for ability to climb on railings

Doors:

  • Recommend deadbolt on front door if easy to open.
  • Use door positioners to prevent fingers from being closed in doors.
  • Use door locks to prevent access to “out-of-bounds” areas.

Electrical:

  • Do not use clips to secure cords – use cord cover instead.
  • Slide covers are recommend for outlets in use. Outlet plugs are okay for plugs not in use.

Water Heater:

  • Turn down water heater to 120 degrees or less – It should take 15-20 seconds to get hot and should not get scalding hot.
